FOREST, DUNES & MOOR
The Bobberg Dunes
The Boberg dunes were created by glaciers in the Weichel Ice Age around 12,000 years ago and have been heavily modified by human intervention. From 1800 to 1920, immense amounts of clay were mined for the production of bricks. In order to obtain sand for raising the height of the marshland and later building roads, a dune was even completely removed. It is difficult to understand today what direct consequences this had for nature and the environment. However, it is known that today’s biodiversity arose not least because of these interventions.
Caution is advised
In 2018, studies by the Federal Environmental Agency found large amounts of dioxin during ground drilling. The fact is that there has been a large industrial area in the immediate vicinity for over 100 years. The area has continued to be investigated since the discovery.
A nice destination for a bike ride
The small stretch on the B5 isn’t quite as pretty, but it’s good for cycling. However, you have the opportunity to take small detours and change your route as you wish through the beautiful and even largest contiguous allotment area in Europe in the Horner Marsch.
Enchanted
The forest borders the dune landscape.
