Harbor birthday – more than 800 years
When you are as old as the Port of Hamburg and have been connected to the whole world for so long, you can look forward to a lot of visitors. The crowds on land are correspondingly large.
On the water it is a little more relaxed and a real insider tip.
On these days, there are many special trips and events to see the port’s birthday from a different perspective.
The Senate steamer – The SCHARHÖRN
The steamship was commissioned in 1907 by the Hamburg City Council under the guise of a surveying vessel. The result, an ultra-modern and luxuriously equipped steamship, turned out to be a prestige object to sail Kaiser Wilhelm II through the harbor. It probably never came to be, and was then used as a survey ship until the 1970s. After being sold to Scotland, it fell into oblivion. Until 1990, when a traditional institution of Altona merchants took on the ageing ship and had it restored over five years as part of the “Youth in Work” project. Since 1995, the SCHAARHÖRN has been moored in the traditional Sandtorhafen harbor in HafenCity and can be rented for events from May to October or visited on Wednesdays from 10 am to 2 pm and on most weekends from 11 am to 3 pm.
By pleasure boat through the harbor
Im Vergleich zu Amsterdam gibt es auf Hamburgs Gewässern, meistens nicht viel Verkehr. Immer wieder schön.
impressive
If you are traveling by boat and the container ships are being loaded and unloaded, you can get very close.
